It isn't uncommon for my friends to ask this, so I let her borrow it. A few days later, she returned it to me when she was ninety pages into it. When I asked why she never finished, she said: "I can't finish it. Every word hurt."
I won't deny what she said. The book is about a school shooting, so you would expect something of that nature to be nothing but violence and gore, right? Well, there is a fair amount of that in this book, but that's not the focus point of the book. The book mainly focuses on the emotions of the four main protagonists: Tomas, Autumn, Claire, and Sylvia. This book is an emotional roller coaster. The actual shooting event kept me in a constant state of terror. Every second, I hoped that another character that I liked wouldn't be killed. I can remember crying during certain parts of the book. The characters' backstories are tragic and will leave you with a hurt feeling. The characters are very detailed. They had complex backstories and relationship. I never felt like any of the characters were cliche or out of place. On top of that, I found the non-offensive use of LGBT and Muslim people in Alabama rather different, but it was a good kind of different. This book is a masterpiece, but it's definitely not for all ages. While the book isn't extremely gory, there is a fair amount it along with lots of violence. There is a small amount of swearing in it, but not that much. If you are below your mid-teens, I wouldn't recommend it. Over all, this was a great story. It was a different perspective on school shootings, but didn't make it excessively gory. The terror mixed well with the drama and the sadness of the story. If you are in the mood for a suspenseful, but emotional novel, then I'd recommend this to you.
