2/26/2017 0 Comments Hide and Seek Review So, for my first reviews, I've decided to review a ton of Wattpad stories because they're a quick read. And to start it off, I'll be reviewing Hide and Seek by Jakayla Toney. The story is about a fourteen year old girl named Emily, who moves in with their parents' old friends after her parents died. After saying there for a while, she begins to notice some strange things that occur there. When she uncovers some of the mysteries, things go horribly wrong.
During the first five chapters, there really isn't that much in the way of scary stuff. I admire that this doesn't have that many shocking or scary things in the beginning, and instead slowly gets into the terror. The events of the book permanently become creepy by the twelfth chapter when Emily tries to run away from the Harmon's mansion. She tries to take her brother Caleb with her, but he turns out to be dead. Now, I do have to admit that I found Caleb's death kind of unnecessary, especially considering what happens next. When Emily tries to escape, Mr. Harmon catches her. He forces her to participate in a deadly game of hide and seek with her friends. From that point forward, the reader will be holding their breath in fear of who will die next until the end. This book was a beautiful spine-chilling creation. The idea of turning hide and seek into a game of life or death is quite the creative-and terrifying-idea. During the game, I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat, hoping that a certain character wouldn't die. It used just the amount of blood and gore to disturb me when I needed to be. The ending of it left me with a feeling of relief, but slight dread. A lot of characters in this are very well written. I felt a strong tie to Emily's emotions of fear and sadness. Some of the deaths left me shocked and heartbroken. I absolutely adored how Mr. Harmon's transition from fairly nice man to psychopath didn't feel out of place or seem to come out of nowhere. A majority of these characters were very important, and I don't think that the story would be the same if you took them out. This is one of those stories that uses GIFs in it. The GIFs in this were terrifying, and a few of them nearly made me scream. I've never seen them used in writing before, and I can see why they were used. The images worked well with the story; and they didn't feel inappropriate in the scene that was taking place then. They helped me envision the events a little and added a bit more terror. For the most part, I enjoyed this. However, I do think that the ending was kind of confusing. It introduced some things and had some twists that seemed to come out of nowhere. Other than that, I didn't have problems with this story. However, just because I enjoyed it, it doesn't mean everyone will enjoy it. There are lots of creepy and disturbing images that might unnerve people. Also, there are quite a few moments with mild blood and gore that could make your stomach turn if you're sensitive to that kind of stuff. I would recommend this to ages fourteen and up. But, if you're a strong-stomached twelve or thirteen year old, I'd strongly suggest you give this a try. My overall rating: 8.5/10
