7/29/2017 0 Comments Review: Mr. Mercedes I'm pretty sure that a lot of you know who Stephen King is. Some of his most popular works are The Shining, Misery, It, and many more. But, that is not what I'll be talking about for now. What I will be discussing is his recent trilogy of crime books. The story is about a retired detective hunting down a man who ran over a bunch of people with a Mercedes Benz years ago. King claims that this is his first hard-boiled detective novel, so I was rather curious to see how he did. So, without further ado, here is my review of Mr. Mercedes.
For the most part, the plot was good. Aside from the occasional slow moments, the story kept at a good pace. I like that King wrote from the perspective of the guy who committed the murders. But, that did make reading it a bit more frustrating when switching back to the other perspective. I know that that was kind of the point, but it kind of left a bit of a damper on my experience. On top of that, it left little to no questions unanswered. For me, I am not a fan of having unanswered questions. There was a good amount of characters in the novel. One or two of the minor characters in the story felt either out of place or unnecessary. But ,that didn't bug me that much. Yet, what bugged me the most was that I didn't know that much about one of the most important characters . Also, I didn't get to know much about Jerome, another main character. But, the other characters are well developed, so I can't complain that much. In the other two books, there should be a bit more information. As a warning, this is one of the more mature novels that I have read. There are several dark and sometimes disgusting scenes and themes in this. The event of the Mercedes murders happens in grisly detail. Several acts, thoughts, and attempts at horrifying and gory murders occur. There is sex, but the actual events are not told. The book is not recommended for anyone under fifteen. All in all, I had a good time reading this. The plot is thrilling and fast paced at times, but knows when to slow down. Most of the characters are well developed aside from a few, but that shouldn't get in the way of anything. If dark and twisty crime novels are your cup of tea, I'd say that you give Mr. Mercedes a try.
